Balearic Islands

The Balearic Islands are an archipelago in Spain in the west of the Mediterranean Sea, near the eastern shore of the Iberian Peninsula.

The four largest islands are Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza and Formentera. The archipelago is an autonomous community and a province of Spain with its capital in Palma de Mallorca. The official languages in the Balearic Islands is Catalan and Spanish. At the moment, the autonomous charter states that the Balearics are one of the peoples of Spain.

Balearic Islands (Islas Baleares) are a wonderful archipelago of small islands that surprise and fascinate with their magnificent landscapes and beaches of exceptional beauty. Each island is not like the other, each has its own specific identity.

The Balearic archipelago is located in the western part of the Mediterranean Sea at approximately the same distance from the Pyrenees peninsula, the south of France and the north of Africa. Three large and one small island form the basis of the archipelago. The main islands of the Balearic Islands are the resorts of Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza and Formentera. Today it is a large center of tourism, the main one in the entire Western Mediterranean.

The role of the Balearic Islands as a crossroads of trade routes in the Mediterranean can’t be underestimated. The history of the islands is full of historical events, which left interesting traces for fans of the past. Various civilizations of the Carthaginians, Moors, Christians influenced the historical development of each island. One of the last conquerors of the islands were Jaime I de Aragón, who seized the archangel in the 13th century, and the Agnlicans who occupied Menorca in 1708-1802.

In addition to the magnificent beaches with crystal clear waters and crazy night clubs, the Balearic Islands can offer other entertainment. Diving sites are among the best in the Mediterranean. Natural caves, water parks, casinos and horse racing - this is not a complete list of entertainment on the islands.

Majorca (Mallorca) - The largest island of Archepelago, which is the capital of the region - Palma de Mallorca (Palma de Mallorca). Resort tourism is the main aspect of the life of Mallorca. The island has a wide network of modern hotels, providing guests with first-class comfort and surprisingly rich and varied nature. Due to its fertile Mediterranean climate, Mallorca is one of the resorts visited by tourists all year round.

Ibiza is the most fashionable European resort, characterized by its specific atmosphere, people, nature and, of course, a unique club movement and nightlife, which are rightfully considered to be one of the best not only in Europe but also in the world. The island is not too small and diverse enough not to be bored, and not too large; so that in a few days you will feel at home.

Menorca is the second largest island in the archipelago. Despite its proximity to Mallorca, it has many features of its own. The island is located in the north-eastern part of the archipelago.

There are two types of architecture throughout the island. On the one hand, completely white houses, typical of the Mediterranean, and on the other hand - buildings in a purely English style, evidence of British presence on the island in the XVIII century. Maon (Mao), the island's main city, is located behind an unusual harbor, an extent of 5 km, which is considered one of the best natural ports of the Mediterranean Sea. In Menorca, many archaeological sites that make it a museum in the open air: various statues, crypts with burials. However, the most mysterious prehistoric monuments are the numerous religious buildings of the second millennium BC, including the mysterious Taula (Taula) - the towers of one large T-shaped stone lying on top of one another. The designation of these buildings is still unknown to scientists.

The basis of the traditional cuisine of the islands is seafood and vegetables. The most popular dishes, however, are very simple to prepare.

There are a large number of recipes for cooking stewed vegetables (Frit mallorquí) with meat or fish. Very popular are the various liquors from the Maori and Menorca (Menorcan Liqueurs, Herbes and Palo)
